Study on the effect of concentrate forages on the consumption and gain of weaned lambs

The experiment was carried out in the Institute of forages – Pleven, with Pleven Blackhead lambs. 36 female lambs with a live weight of 30 kg and 30 days of age were used. Three concentrate mixtures of maze, wheat, sunflower meal, soya meal, milk powder and molasses. The mixtures were equalized on energy and protein respectively 1,22 NUG, 17,1 % DP and 116 g PDI. Molasses was included in two of the mixtures (granulated and flour). The molasses was substituted for flavor in the third mixture. Alfalfa hey of an average quality was used as roughage. No significant differences were observed in the consumption of dry matter from the tested rations. In the beginning of the experiment (first sub-period) the lambs of I, II and III group consumed respectively 335, 390 and 354 g dry matter per head per day of the combined forage and respectively 50, 55 and 62 g alfalfa hey. By the end of the experiment the dry matter consumption per head per day increased respectively to 633, 597 and 624 g of the combined forage and to 215, 225 and 236 g hey. The highest average daily gain for the experimental period was realized by the lambs fed with granulated mixture - 220 g, followed by the group fed with the mixture in which the molasses was substituted for flavor – 216 g. The lowest consumption of forage and energy was determined for lambs fed with granulated forage – respectively 3,354 kg and 3,59 NUG. The studied concentrate mixtures given to the animals together with the alfalfa hey were suitable for feeding of early weaned lambs over 30 days of age and a live weight of 11 кg.
