[Quality as the economic category: the evolution of development]

In the conditions of modern management the term quality represents the system-defined, multilevel category showing the enterprise capability to constantly develop in the changing conditions of competition and satisfy the requirements of parties which are interested in its activity. The term quality as the economic category and object of economics is closely related with the category of consumer value. Economic meaning of quality category is determined by the assessment of product public utility defined by the socially necessary quality. Investigation results prove the existence of wide spectrum of quality concept modifications which is caused by the complex character of this phenomenon. Dynamics of definition of term quality is presented. Correlation between products quality and their usability, consumer prices, competitiveness, production costs and profit reflects the economic relation patterns between the mentioned categories. The following groups of interpretation of quality concept are proposed: 1. quality as the absolute estimate (product/service superiority); 2. quality as product characteristics (product parameters assessment); 3. quality correspondence to product or service functions; 4. quality correspondence to product cost; 5. quality correspondence to production standards
