Influence of plantation row spacing on quality and yield of hops - Information

The aim of this work was to test different distances between hop plants within a row and to define the optimal number of hop bines per wire in order to reach a yield of 2-3 t/ha as well as high alpha acid contents. Field trials were carried out during the years 2004-2006 and the hybrid variety Agnus selected for this purpose was tested. The space between the rows was 300 cm. Two distances (114 and 133 cm) were tested and compared with the control one (100 cm). In addition, the standard kind of four trained bines from each hill was compared with a new one (five bines per hill). The yield of hops was the highest when the distance of 114 cm was used (2.80 tons of dry hops per hectare). It amounted to 2.69 t/ha when the distance was 133 cm and was the lowest one (2.58 t/ha) with 100 cm. The yield increase in the plots with new spacings was at the limit of significance. Weather was the main factor influencing the yield in 2006. Significant differences between the plots were found out in the year with very good growing conditions (2005) as well as in the year with relatively bad weather conditions (2006). If average conditions prevailed (2004), no significant differences between experimental and control plots were observed. Alpha acid content was the highest (12.45%) at 114 cm; a slight decrease was found at 133 cm (11.92%). In control plants, it amounted to 12.29%.
