Effect of hydrogel application on survival and growth of pine seedlings in reclamations

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different hydrogel treatments on the growth and survival of one-year old Scots pine seedlings planted into two different sites with soil reclaimed after sand mining. In the site I, the seedlings were treated after lifting by STOCKOSORB AGRO once or twice. The following variants were tested in the site II: 1) control plants; 2) application of STOCKOSORB MICRO granules to planting holes; 3) application of STOCKOSORB MICRO gel to planting holes; 4) root system treated with STOCKOSORB POWDER gel in the nursery. In the first site, the application of STOCKOSORB AGRO increased the survival rate of the seedlings. The difference in the survival rate between treated and control plants was most pronounced after the second than after the first vegetation period. In the site II, the application of STOCKOSORB did not improve either the growth or the survival of the tested plants. On the contrary, it lowered the survival rate in the variant 2 by about 20%. Nevertheless, the values of height and root collar diameter were very similar in all the variants tested.
