Old barley varieties were grown in the same conditions as current barley varieties during the years 2006 and 2007. Their agronomic characters were compared. Most old varieties headed 5 days and achieved full maturity earlier than the modern ones. They were also by 25-30 cm higher. On the contrary, modern varieties had a higher number of fertile tillers per square m, by about 2 t/ha higher grain yield and slightly higher thousand grain weight than the old ones. They were more resistant to lodging, to powdery mildew and partly also to brown rust. There were no significant differences between the two types of varieties with regard to the resistance to net blotch and scald.
