Abstract Effect of on farm storage on quality and quantity of two commercial sugar beet varieties This experiment was conducted in order of the Effect of on-farm storage on quality and quantity of two commercial sugar beet varieties (Rassoul and Dorotea) in Sugar Beet Seed Institute for two years, 2002-2003. Each variety was cultivated and after harvesting, roots were stored in two silages (L:3m,W:2.5m and H:2m ). Root samples for beet quality control were taken: 1-immediately after harvesting, 2-after three week storage and 3-after six week. The results showed that the sugar content of both varieties were the same during the experiment. This factor showed an increase in the second year of experiment for both varieties. Sugar content of the samples was increased during the storage, but statistically there was no significant difference between different storage times. Molasses sugar in beet samples of the two years was significantly different. T he content of molasses sugar in the first year was more than the second year. During the storage, the amount of molasses sugar showed an increase. The moisture percent of each sample was reduced during the storage but statistically there was no significant difference. During two years of this study, the moisture percent of root was more in Dorotea as compared to that of Rassoul. Potassium content of both varieties during the storage increased with the amount of Potassium content in Dorotea sample more than in Rassoul. Sodium content of both varieties showed the same increase as potassium during storage, but there was no significant difference in sodium content between two varieties. ل- amino nitrogen of two varieties didn't differ from each other and during the storage there were no changes observed. In experiment of physical properties of sugar beet during the storage, the shear stress, compress measured and module of elasticity of both varieties were reduced. There were no significantly differences in the shear stress and module of elasticity of two varieties but Dorotea had a higher compress measured level than Rassoul.
