Identification and pathogenicity of fungi associated with Heterodera schachtii

One hundred and nine fungal isolates obtained from Heterodera schachtii from Khorasan province were screened against sugar beet cyst nematode. Surface sterilized females were placed on 0.8% water agar containing antibiotics in Petri dishes. After three weeks at 21°C individual females were opened and egg contents examined under light microscope and number of diseased eggs containing fungal mycelium were recorded. The identified fungi and infection percent of the eggs were Pochonia chlamydosporia var. chlamydosporia (50–90%), Paecilomyces lilacinus (8–61%), Verticillium epiphytum (12%), Embellisia chlamydospora (0%), Acremonium cf. strictrum, A. persicinum and Acremonium spp. (2–28%), Fusarium equiseti, F. solani, F. oxysporum, F. lateritium and F. nygamai (1–15%), Cylindrocarpon sp., Cladosporium herbarum, Aspergillus fumigatus, Clonostachys rosea and Chaetomium According to available literature this is the first record of F. lateritium, . murorum (2–16%) V. epiphytum, C. rosea and H. grisea from sugar beet cyst nematode and it is the first report of V. epiphytum and the genus Humicola for the mycoflora of Iran. Generally, 21, 6 and 5% of the isolates belonged to Fusarium, P. c.var. chlamydosporia and Acremonium and Aspergillus, P. lilacinus, Cylindrocarpon and sterile constituted 2% of the strains. P. C.var. chlamydosporia and P. lilacinus parasitized 89 and 61% of the eggs in vitro and in pot experiment, P. lilacinus reduced population of H. schachtii by 18%..
