The stress response in mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis, LMK 1819) haemocytes: modulation of the morphological and phagocytic properties

The present study aimed at investigating the effect of thermal stress on morphological and phagocytic properties of the mussel haemocytes using a cell viability analyser, the flow cytometry, a fluorimetry micro-method assay and the confocal laser scanning microscopy. The cell viability analyzer showed, after the induced stress, a significant modification of the haemocyte distribution on the basis of their diameter and circularity. The flow cytometry, besides revealing distinct attitude in the haemocyte sub-populations, confirmed, together with the other methods, the relationship between the modified pattern and the altered defensive function. The investigated haemocyte parameters could represent useful markers both in research studies and applied monitoring

[Questo studio era finalizzato a studiare l'effetto dello stress termico sulle proprietà morfologiche e fagocitarie degli emociti di mitili, utilizzando un analizzatore di vitalità cellulare, la citometria a flusso, un test in micrometodo fluorimetrico e la microscopia confocale. L'analizzatore di vitalità cellulare ha evidenziato, dopo lo stress indotto, modificazioni significative della distribuzione degli emociti in base al loro diametro e alla loro circolarità. La citometria a flusso, oltre a mettere in luce una distinta attitudine nelle sottopopolazioni di emociti, ha confermato, unitamente agli altri metodi, la correlazione esistente fra la morfologia modificata e la funzione difensiva alterata. I parametri relativi agli emociti potrebbero rappresentare marcatori utili, sia a livello di ricerca, sia per i controlli pratici.]
