Application of predator bug, Orius albidipennis (Reut), (Hem.: Anthocoridae) for control of Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thys.:Thripidae) on Carnation and comparison with chemical methods and sticky traps

One of the most important pests of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) is Thrips tabaci Lindeman. The most active natural enemies of this pest are predator bugs, Orius spp., (Hem.: Anthocoridae). This research performed in Mahallat in 2002. In this research Orius albidipennis (Reut) was held in controlled environmental chambers at temperature of 25±1°C, 65±5 %RH, 16 h light (9000 lux): 8 h dark photoperiod. Bags were fed with eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, (Lep. : Pyralidae) and pollen of corn and from Geranium leaves were used for ovipositon of bugs . Adult bugs were released weekly and were used for control of carnation thrips in treatments: Releasing 3 bugs per 1 shrub of carnation and releasing 8 bugs per 1m2 (that contains 9 shrubs with 25cm distance). Then they were compared with treatments: Solution spry deltamethrin (Decis) EC 2.5%, fenpropathrin (Danitol) EC 10%, soil drench imidacloprid (Confidor) SC 35%, sticky yellow card, sticky blue card and control. The experiment was performed in completely randomized design with 4 replication. Real mortality percentage was counted in 1st, 3rd, 7th, 14th and 21st days after had been treated them. Analysis of variance showed significantly different in 5% level and Duncan ,s multiple range test was used to compare of treatments means. Results of 21st day showed that deltamethrin with 96.45 %MR and fenpropathrin with 93.93 %MR have the most mortality. Imidacloprid, releasing (3bugs/1shrub), releasing (8bugs/ 1m2), yellow card and blue card have 90.52%, 87.31, 80.47, 69.84 and 63.51 %MR respectively. Also bugs releasing effect are after chemical compounds not only they haven’t any environmental pollution but also have caused high percentage of mortality thrips population. Therefor releasing bugs are recommended as suitable method in Carnation thrips integrated control
