Identification, biology and spread of the red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) in Italy [Tuscany]

英语. The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier), is a dangerous pest that feeds on the soft tissues of a broad range of palms. The weevil is native to Southern Asia, where it is known to cause damage to coconut and oil palms. From here the pest has rapidly colonized the Arabian peninsula, Egypt and Spain. This work focuses on the presence of the weevil in Italy on Phoenix canariensis (Hortorum ex Chabaud) in plant nurseries in Pistoia (Central Italy) and Naples (Southern Italy). The possibility of pest acclimatization and spreading in Italy in the next few years is discussed. Due to the risks connected with the introduction of this species, in March 2005 the EPPO recommended that R. ferrugineus should be subjected to phytosanitary regulation. This paper includes a description of the different stages of development of the weevil and a simplified key for identifying the two palm weevils R. ferrugineus and R. palmarum, both of which are included in the EPPO Alert List. A review of the techniques used in the last ten years to control and manage the pest is also presented

La specie, originaria dell'Asia Centro-Meridionale, è nota per gli ingenti danni a numerose palme, tra cui quelle da cocco, da datteri e da olio, che rivestono un ruolo fondamentale nell'economia di molti Paesi già interessati dalla presenza del curculionide. Dal suo areale di origine R. ferrugineus si è diffuso in breve tempo in Medio Oriente, in Egitto e in Spagna. Per la rapida espansione e la gravità dei danni arrecati alle palme, è stato incluso nella Alert List dell'EPPO. Nell'articolo si riporta il ritrovamento della specie su esemplari di Phoenix canariensis (Hortorum ex Chabaud) nel bacino florovivaistico di Pistoia e nel napoletano; si discute la possibilità di acclimatazione e diffusione della specie in Italia. Viene inoltre riportata una chiave di identificazione semplificata per la determinazione degli adulti e sono descritte le tecniche di difesa adottate negli ultimi dieci anni contro questo parassita
