Possibilities to use different kinds of mulching materials on ornamental plants for urban green areas: experimental results [Piedmont]

英语. Mulching has become common in recent years in urban green spaces, allowing maintenance costs to be considerably reduced in the areas where it is practised. In this work, different long lasting mulching materials have been compared (UV stabilized polypropylene raffia fabric, black low density polyethylene film, coconut fibre fabric, maize starch-based mulch films and non-woven fabrics), evaluating the effects of their use on the ground cover rose cv Lovely Fairy. Coconut fibre proved to maintain adequate levels of soil moisture, keeping soil temperature stable during the day and influencing plant growth positively. The use of this material resulted in a lower growth of weeds in the hole from which the ornamental plant was growing, although it caused a greater development of weeds growing through the cuts opened incidentally in the sheet. Polyethylene, although having a lower maintenance of soil moisture and thermal stability, yielded the highest number of flowers and the greatest diameter of the plant. Other treatments gave intermediate results. As to biodegradable maize starch-based film, regarding its flimsiness and shorter life, it is preferable to use it whenever the soil is covered with short living ornamental plants and wherever priority aims are in a context of environmental safeguard

[La pacciamatura è divenuta una pratica comune, in anni recenti, negli spazi urbani a verde, consentendo la riduzione dei costi di manutenzione nelle aree in cui viene effettuata. In questo lavoro sono stati confrontati diversi materiali per pacciamatura di lunga durata (tessuto di raffia e polipropilene stabilizzato agli UV, film di polietilene nero a bassa densità, tessuto di fibra di cocco, film per pacciamatura a base di amido di mais e tessuti non-tessuti), valutando gli effetti del loro impiego sulla cv di rosa da aiuole Lovely Fairy. La fibra di cocco si è dimostrata in grado di mantenere livelli adeguati di umidità del terreno, mantenendone stabile la temperatura durante il giorno e influenzando positivamente la crescita delle piante. L'impiego di questo materiale si è tradotto in una minore crescita delle infestanti a livello del foro da cui cresceva la pianta, sebbene causasse un maggiore sviluppo di infestanti a livello dei tagli praticati accidentalmente nel foglio. Il polietilene, per quanto dotato di una minore capacità di mantenimento dell'umidità e della stabilità termica del suolo, determinava la produzione del numero più elevato di fiori e il maggior diametro della pianta. Gli altri trattamenti hanno fornito risultati intermedi. Quanto al film biodegradabile basato su amido di mais, per la sua inconsistenza e durata minore, è preferibile utilizzarlo quando il terreno è coperto da piante ornamentali a ciclo breve e quando gli scopi prioritari fanno riferimento a un contesto di salvaguardia ambientale.]
