Forest certification and poplar plantations in Italy. Pt.1

Forest management and CoC (chain of custody) certification, which applies to both natural forests and plantations, is recognised to be a powerful marketing instrument and a well-founded tool to improve the environmental and social performances of a forest enterprise. The role of plantations for timber supplying is growing and it is expected to grow even more in the future. Forest certification can give evidences about forest plantations management sustainability and provide companies with competitive advantages on the market. Nevertheless, certification initiatives in poplar plantations in Italy are still limited. The paper describes, in this first part, the driving forces for implementing certification in such a context and the main differences between the FSC and PEFC standards, developed at National level for poplar plantations. In the second part, the results of an ad hoc survey carried out among poplar plantations owners and managers will be presented

[La certificazione applicata alla gestione forestale e alla rintracciabilità del legno, che riguarda sia le foreste naturali, sia le piantagioni, è ritenuta uno strumento importante di marketing e un mezzo collaudato per migliorare le performance ambientali e sociali di un'impresa forestale. Il ruolo delle piantagioni come fonte di approvvigionamento di legname da opera sta assumendo un maggiore rilievo e diverrà ancor più importante in futuro. La certificazione forestale può fornire evidenze e garanzie rispetto alla sostenibilità della gestione delle piantagioni forestali e garantire agli operatori una maggiore competitività sul mercato. Ciononostante, in Italia le iniziative di certificazione relative alle piantagioni di pioppo sono ancora limitate. L'articolo descrive, in questa prima parte, le motivazioni alla certificazione in tale contesto e le principali differenze fra gli standard FSC e PEFC, sviluppati a livello nazionale per le piantagioni di pioppo. Nella seconda parte saranno presentati i risultati di un'indagine ad hoc condotta nell'ambito delle aziende pioppicole italiane.]
