GIS tools for energy use of agro-forestry biomass [Geographical Information Systems; Tuscany]

英语. The wood biomass harvesting, storage, transformation to biofuel and energetic conversion associated with the heating supply are the main steps of the wood-energy chain. Every step depends, in greater or smaller measure, on the geographical position of each process, considering that the local distribution is often not homogeneous. Therefore, with the purpose to estimate the possibility of the use of agro-forest biomass as energy source, a Geographical Information System was developed integrating the data related to ground use, topography, slope, road networks, administrative limits, as well as the information related to the actual and future management of the territory. These data were processed to evaluate the areas in which biomass use results advantageous and to optimize the process with the aim to reduce the final energy cost, assuring a competitiveness in comparison to traditional fossil fuels. The possible centres of biomass harvest were identified related to the territorial requirements of thermal energy. The GIS was applied to the territory of San Casciano Val di Pesa (Chianti area, Florence province) and in particular to the centres with defined dimensions (from a minimum of 40 to a maximum of 800 residents), as well as receptive tourist structures, and allowed to hypothesize future scenarios in which the whole need of thermal energy could be satisfied by local wood biomass

意大利语. [La raccolta, l'immagazzinamento, la trasformazione in biocarburante e la trasformazione energetica della biomassa legnosa rappresentano i principali segmenti della filiera legno-energia. Ognuno di essi dipende, in misura maggiore o minore, dalla collocazione geografica di ciascun processo, considerando che la distribuzione locale è spesso disomogenea. Perciò, allo scopo di valutare la possibilità dell'impiego della biomassa agro-forestale come fonte energetica, è stato sviluppato un sistema di informazione geografica (GIS) per integrare i dati relativi a uso del suolo, topografia, pendenza, rete viaria, limiti amministrativi, così come le informazioni relative alle gestione attuale e futura del territorio. Questi dati sono stati elaborati per valutare le aree in cui l'impiego della biomassa risulta vantaggioso e per ottimizzare il processo al fine di ridurre il costo finale dell'energia, assicurando la competitività rispetto ai combustibili fossili tradizionali. Sono stati identificati i possibili centri di raccolta della biomassa in relazione alle esigenze territoriali di energia termica. Il GIS è stato applicato al comune di San Casciano Val di Pesa (zona del Chianti, provincia di Firenze) e in particolare ai centri con dimensioni definite (da un minimo di 40 a un massimo di 800 residenti), così come alle strutture turistiche, e ha consentito di ipotizzare scenari futuri in cui l'intera domanda di energia termica potrebbe essere soddisfatta dalla biomassa legnosa locale.]
