Effect of amendments with break-crops on the control of some soil borne pathogens [Calabria]

This paper reports the results of a research conducted in 2002, aimed at evaluating agronomic behaviour, in terms of growth and biomass production, of different break-crops and the level of control of a number of soil borne diseases determined by their amendment. Two localities in Calabria, San Marco Argentano and Melito Porto Salvo, were chosen to study the growth dynamics of the above-mentioned species and, in the latter, the influence of green manure of the same species on the soil borne fungal pathogens Fusarium, Verticillium and Phytophthora. A high growth rate, considerable expansion of the leaf area and high biomass production were observed in all species. Sinapis alba cv Concerta and Frankie and Brassica juncea cv Isci 20 produced a higher quantity of biomass than the other treatments. The presence of Verticillium spp. and Phytophthora spp. in the soil at Melito Porto Salvo was found to be negligible, while the average number of Fusarium spp. colonies, isolated before sowing, was equal to 38.6 gE-1 dry soil. Two months after amendment, the number of pathogen colonies had increased in all treatments. The ineffectiveness of the amendments on Fusarium spp. could be attributed to a reduced susceptibility of the fungus to the type of isothiocyanates released by the species used in the research

[Questo contributo riferisce i risultati di una ricerca condotta nel 2002, finalizzata a valutare il comportamento agronomico, in termini di crescita e produzione di biomassa, di specie biocide diverse e il livello di controllo esercitato dall'ammendamento con le stesse su un certo numero di malattie trasmesse dal terreno. Sono state scelte due località calabresi, San Marco Argentano e Melito Porto Salvo, per studiare la dinamica di crescita delle specie sopramenzionate e, nella seconda, l'effetto del sovescio verde delle stesse sui patogeni fungini trasmessi dal terreno, Fusarium, Verticillium e Phytophthora. In tutte le specie sono stati riscontrati un tasso di crescita elevato, una considerevole espansione della lamina fogliare e una produzione elevata di biomassa. Sinapis alba cv Concerta e Frankie e Brassica juncea cv Isci 20 hanno prodotto una quantità maggiore di biomassa rispetto agli altri trattamenti. A Melito Porto Salvo la presenza di Verticillium ssp. e Phytophthora spp. è risultata trascurabile, mentre il numero medio di colonie di Fusarium spp., isolate prime della semina, era pari a 38,6 gE-1 di terreno essiccato. Due mesi dopo l'ammendamento, il numero di colonie dei patogeni era aumentato in tutti i trattamenti.
