International Certificate on Postharvest Technology: an academic educational experience in the postharvest field between EU and US institutions

The ICPT (International Curriculum on Postharvest Technology of horticultural crops) was conceived within a EU/US Cooperation Programme in higher education and vocational education and training call for proposal, with the aim to develop an international based curriculum focused on increasing professional skills of graduate students on postharvest technology of horticultural crops, including fresh-cut produce. Contents of the curriculum will cover the aspects related to postharvest biology, physiology and pathology of horticultural crops, quality assessment, equipment engineering, logistics and technology of perishable transportation, marketing aspects related to fruit and vegetables and International legislation. The Certificate program will consist of a minimum of 18 credits to be obtained taking courses (12 credits) and carrying out a short individual research project (6 credits) at two or more Institutions (one in EU and one in US consortium). Scholarships are provided to 24 European and 24 American students participating in the program with actual exchange starting during the academic year 2005-2006. International experience and the study of a foreign language are not secondary objectives of the program. The involved Institutions are the University of Foggia, Italy (UNIFG, leader of EU Consortium), the University of Cordoba, Spain (UCO), the University of Thessaly, Greece (UTH), the University of California, Davis (UCD, leader of the US Consortium), the University of Florida, Gainesville (UF), and the Texas A and M University, College Station (TAMU)

L'ICPT (International Curriculum on Postharvest Technology of horticultural crops) è nato nell'ambito di un progetto di cooperazione Stati Uniti-Unione Europea nell'alta formazione, con l'obiettivo di sviluppare un curriculum internazionale specializzato in tecnologie postraccolta dei prodotti ortofrutticoli. I contenuti di questo curriculum coprono gli aspetti legati alla biologia, fisiologia, patologia dei prodotti ortofrutticoli freschi e della quarta gamma, le tecnologie post-raccolta, la valutazione della qualità, gli aspetti impiantistici della filiera, la logistica e la tecnologia del trasporto dei prodotti deperibili, nonché gli aspetti legati al marketing e alla legislazione internazionale su frutta e ortaggi freschi. Il programma consiste di un minimo di 18 crediti ECTS, che comprendono almeno 12 crediti derivanti dalla frequenza dei corsi e fino a 6 crediti derivanti dallo svolgimento di un programma di ricerca individuale. Tali crediti devono essere conseguiti tra 2 o più istituzioni coinvolte (una in Europa e una negli Stati Uniti). Nel programma sono previste borse di studio per 24 studenti europei e 24 studenti statunitensi. Lo scambio di studenti inizierà nell'anno accademico 2005-2006. L'esperienza internazionale e l'approfondimento dello studio di una lingua straniera sono obiettivi non secondari nella pianificazione di questo programma.
