Efficacy of aerial treatments with Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki for control of the oak processionary moth and their impact on the lepidopteran fauna [Quercus cerris L.; Tuscany]

In spring 2004, after Thaumetopoea processionea (L.) populations had entered the progradation phase in Central Italy plant communities consisting mainly of Quercus cerris L., we carried out large-scale control trials with Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk) distributed by air at doses of 31.75, 44.45 and 57.15 BIU/ha. The treatment with Btk suspension, carried out at the end of April when the leaves were in the initial distension phase, resulted in effective control of the defoliator population, even in areas treated with 31.75 BIU/ha. An evaluation of the effect of the treatments on other components of the lepidopteran fauna in the treated oak woods was carried out by the daily control of traps situated under the crowns for one month. The small numbers of dead larvae of other species throughout the observation period indicated a low impact of the control intervention on the biodiversity of the oak woods

Nella primavera 2004, a seguito dell'entrata in fase di progradazione delle popolazioni di Thaumetopea processionea in formazioni dell'Italia Centrale a prevalenza di Quercus cerris, è stata realizzata una prova di lotta su vasta scala con Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk), distribuito con mezzo aereo a dosi di 31,75 BIU/ha (2,5 l/ha), 44,45 BIU/ha (3,5 l/ha) e 57,15 BIU/ha (4,5 l/ha). Il trattamento sperimentale con la sospensione di Btk, effettuato a fine aprile quando le foglie erano in fase iniziale di distensione, ha permesso di conseguire un efficace controllo della popolazione di questo defogliatore anche negli ambienti trattati con 31,75 BIU/ha. Le indagini sull'effetto dei trattamenti sulle altre componenti della lepidotterofauna dei querceti trattati, condotte mediante il controllo giornaliero di raccoglitori posizionati sotto le chiome e mantenuti in bosco per un mese, hanno consentito di rilevare un basso impatto dell'intervento di lotta sulla biodiversità di questi boschi, evidenziato dalla esiguità delle raccolte di larve morte di altre specie per tutto il periodo di osservazione
