Within-tree variation of wood qualities relating to pulp properties in Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is one of the major plantation species for pulpwood production in many countries because Eucalyptus spp. trees possess high pulp yield and pulp quality, as well as their good growth. The selection of their elite trees is very important to breed trees possessing high wood quality. In the present study, the representative heights in the trunk to indicate the whole-tree values and the within-tree variations of cell morphologies (fiber, vessel, ray and axial parenchyma) were examined in E. camaldulensis and E. globulus. Furthermore, the whole-tree values of pulp properties and the representative heights were examined based on the relationships between cell morphology and pulp properties. Finally, the most appropriate height for sampling an increment core was determined to assess pulpwood productivity in both species. The results obtained in the present study are summarized below.
