Growth property of 5 Carex species transplanted on an excavation slope

To aim the revegetation of excavation slopes by sedge, we collected 5 species of native terrestrial sedges (Carex jackiana, C. siderosticta, C. japonica. C. dolichostachya, and C. shimizuensis) in the area around Shinshu University, transplanted them on an excavation slope, and analyzed their growth properties. Transplanting was carried out in June 2005, and the number of stocks and coverage were investigated in October 2005, June 2006, and November 2006. By comparison of the rate of increasing stocks with that of coverage, the vegetative growth differed among 5 species. We recognized the different growth types in which each stock increased its size, in which subterranean stolons produced many new stocks, and the middle type of those. As for the wintering of plants during autumn to winter, the rate of increasing coverage raised logarithmically against the percentage of the success of stock wintering. It seemed that 90 or more percent of the success of stock wintering was necessary to keep the existing coverage of the community. Analysis of the coverage in different periods showed that the transplanted plants increased up to 100% of coverage in some plots 1 year after transplanting, and then inter-species competition seemed to become severe.
