The effect of environmental variables on stomatal conductance was studied with particular reference to its relationship with latent heat flux over a sand dune planted to soybean in Tottori in Japan. Latent heat flux (LE) was calculated using the Bowen ratio energy balance (BREB) method and stomatal conductance (gsub(s)) estimated with a Jarvis-type model. The study showed that stomata play a crucial role in bridging net radiation (Rsub(n)) and LE: increase in Rn led to increase in gs and thus to higher LE. In the vegetation growing over a sand dune, a lower vapor deficit may have no effect on stomatal conductance. The relationship between LE and leaf area index (LAI) was unimodal with a peak in LE when the LAI was 2.5.
