Racking test of wood frames constructed by CLCS (Coupled Lumber Construction with Surface-treated Steel)

We have developed a simple but tough lumber construction called CLCS (Coupled Lumber Construction with Surface-treated Steel) using a pair of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) lumber as a frame member, making use of high initial stiffness and high yield strength characteristics of glued joints, which improved the usual inherent shortcoming of glued joints. In our present paper, we measured the strength properties of the two types of wood-frames manufactured by CLCS using the racking test. Also we partly calculated the relationship between load and deformation of the frame, using FEM by reference to the information on the load-rotating angle relation, obtained previously using the L-type loading test. The results were as follows: all the specimens showed large deformation without rupture up to a rotation angle of 10E-1 radian, and little decrease in load was observed after the maximum load was reached : these are typical characteristics of CLCS. Rotation angle of the frame within the proportional limit was able to be predicted using a load-rotation diagram of the corner open loading test by FEM. Shear resistance factors were 0.7 for A-type (all the columns and beams were adhered at the joint using steel plates), and 0.6 for B-type (only a pair of columns was not adhered at the joint).
