Load-defection behavior of compressed sitka spruce [Picea sitchensis]

Four-point bending tests were conducted using small-and-clear and compressed specimens of Sitka spruce. From the load-deflection relations, Young's modulus, proportional limit stress, bending strength, and bending work were measured and compared with each other. Young's modulus and proportional limit stress naturally increased as expected after the compression treatment, whereas the bending strength did not show the increase as expected. Differently to the properties mentioned above, the bending work decreased after the compression treatment. When the bending load was applied to the longitudinal-radial plane of compressed wood, it immediately decreased after attaining its maximum. In contrast, the load gradually decreased after the attainment of the maximum when it was applied to the longitudinal-tangential plane.
