Participatory appraisal and packaging of land resources information: experiences from Mashuru Division, Kajiado district

Land resources information serves as a basic tool for research, extension and farming communities. The Kenya Soil Survey (KSS) has produced many reports on soils 3Ild other land resources in Kenya at different mapping scales, however, some of the information contained in these reports is not fully utilized. In its deliberate endeavour to collect, store, access and present soil information in a more attractive and easily understood format, KSS has since 1988 introduced innovative methods of data collection, interpretation and information dissemination. These include soil survey by districts rather than by map-sheets, computer - assisted data storage and map digitization in a geographic information system (GIS). Further, KSS has involved stakeholders in the process by organizing district workshops to publicize the land resources information and expertise available. These measures have a significant positive impact on interactions between KSS and the users of the information. It has been observed, however, that the products and services provided by KSS are still low in demand as they do not adequately attract and satisfy the needs of all clients, partly because the information is too technical, and therefore difficult to interpret. The objective of this study was to develop a participatory methodology that helps to inventorise and package land resources information so as to create an effective demand for KSS products and services. Participatory Appraisal and Packaging (pAP) was applied in Mashuru division of Kajiado to prepare specific products for th.e research, extension and farmers.
