The national agricultural research institutes in Kenya and Mali are developing a participatory learning and action research (PLAR) process for Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM). The aim of the process is to assist farmers to improve soil fertility management through an approach of diagnosing and analysing the present situation, followed by step-wise planning, experimenting and evaluating alternative soil fertility management practices. The process builds on partici\{Jatory interaction and learning between farmers themselves, and farmers and change agents, (Research/extension). Evidence indicates that PLAR approach has a higher adoption rate of new technologies because the farmers are involved in the design layout, implementation! experimentation, monitoring and evaluation.
