As the prices of cultured fish such as young yellowtail, red seabream, and Japanese flounder declined in recent years, growers of cultured fish have been in an extremely difficult situation. In order to counteract, approaches have been taken to develop techniques for the seed production and culture of many different kinds of fish with a focus on upmarket fish. Among them, spotted halibut (Verasper variegates) is recognized as a high-class fish and its introduction as a new kind of cultured fish has been keenly desired. Hence, the present study aimed at the commercial culture of spotted halibut; an investigation was conducted on problems of seed production, the growth of artificially reared seeds, the development of high-quality and low-price feeds, and their characteristics of nutritional requirements.
