There is timber!

The recent deficits in the market for timber resources and the decision of Russia to increase export tariffs on roundwood substantially and in the near future - all of this is forcing the forest sector to deal with improvements to the local forest industry quickly and effectively. There is no doubt at all that the availability of local forest resources could be improved in many ways in Latvia, both in the short and in the long term. Worth debate are the unofficial results of the first forest resource monitoring study. They show that there is more forest in Latvia than we had thought, and the increase in timber volumes each year is considerably higher than official data would indicate. That doesn't mean, of course, that we can increase the cutting of timber to any radical degree, but it does allow us to look into the future with greater hope. Latvia has timber, and it will continue to have timber, provided that we manage our forests with economic effectiveness.
