One of the most important parts in the system of horse selection is objective evaluation of the inherent biological and farming traits of the horse. Horse breeding tendency in Lithuania is rapidly changing from breeding utility horses to horses for sports, entertainment and recreation. Thus, a necessity has arisen to find such criteria and methods for the evaluation of the biological and farming traits of native Lithuanian horse breeds, including the Žemaitukai, that would determine the integration of these breeds into the general usage system. The breeding value of horses is dependent on many traits. Thus, various evaluation systems can be applied for the determination of the breeding value. Horses that are entered into Stud-books or computerized programmes, should be also included into breeding schemes, tested for their pedigree, exterior, typical features and performance. The purpose of the present study was to analyse Žemaitukai horse performance tests and to familiarize ourselves with the tests for local horse breeds in the neighbouring countries (Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Germany).
