Usage of fodder galega biomass for the biogas production

Fodder galega (Galega orientals Lam.) is an early maturing perennial forage legume, high in productivity and capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen. The 35 mixed (13 binary and 22 multi-species) swards were developed on Stagnic Luvisol and Gleyic Podzol soils. Binary- and multi-species seed mixtures were composed of fodder galega (Galega orientalis Lam.) 'Gale' and 13 grass species. Swards were cut two to four times during the growing season. In production years of pure galega swards, without application of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, provided 40-70 t haE-1 green biomasses a year. The average yields of DM were attained in early flower: 10.27-14.23 t haE-1 DM. In Stagnic Luvisol the average productivity of mixed swards was 11.27 t haE-1 DM and in Gleyic Podzol it was 10.53 t haE-1 DM. The average content of metabolizable energy was 10.9 MJ kgE-1 DM of pure fodder galega, in mixed galega-grass stands it was 11.4+-1.1 MJ kgE-1 DM. Under the Latvian climatic and soil conditions, it is needed to find acceptable energy crops. Biogas yield from galega and cow manure as control was investigated in four laboratory scale 51 digesters. Methane yield in digesters were 384.2 l/kgvsd; 309.2 l/kgvsd; 244 l/kgvsd obtained from different mixtures of galega, water and cow manure and was 218.6 l/kgvsd from cow manure.
