Herbaceous biomass compositions as solid biofuel resource

The essential condition of the global sustainability is the development of renewable energy resources. Mainly heat and electricity energy production from dry biomass is planned using it as solid biofuel. The main resources for biomass agro-ecotechnologies can be cereal straw residues, energy crops and emergent vegetation from wetlands. Growing of herbaceous energy crops is more preferable for agriculture, because delayed harvesting in winter allow obtaining biomass with humidity less than 15% and the content of nutrients (P, K) 50% less than in autumn season. Biomass conditioning as herbaceous stalk material flattening, cutting and compacting are recommended for reducing transportation and storage expenses. Peat can be used as the best additive for manufacturing of solid biofuel, because it improves density, durability of stalk material briquettes (pellets) avoiding corrosion of boilers. For these reasons, herbaceous biomass composition with peat is recommended for solid biofuel production. Experimentally, density of straw briquettes is greater than 1.0 g cmE-3 in compaction process is obtained under the conditions that peat proportion in composition exceeds 35%. Pressing energy consumption for briquetting of chopped common reed and straw stalk material particles with peat showed a maximal value ~40 kJ kgE-1.
