The fractional content of spruce stand trees biomass in Latvia

Empirical data of 21 sample trees from spruce stands of various growth conditions types (Oxalidosa, Myrtilloso-polytrichosa, Myrtillosa mel.), site quality indices (I**a, I, II), stand stocking (0.6-0.8) and age classes as well as tree species composition) were collected. This material comprised biomass of forest stand fractions such as branches, needles, stumps and roots (Table 1). It was needed to estimate transition rate values C. for the calculation biomass of abovementioned trees fractions. The following values were obtained (arithmetic mean ± standard error): for branches cz = 0.13539+-0.01453; for needles cSk= 0.13939+-0.02185; for stumps cc = 0.07095+-0.00451; for roots cs= 0.17905+-0.01577; common for all non-stem fractions Sum(ci) = 0.52478+-0.03945. The amount of stem biomass was calculated using formula (1), but quantities of non-stem constituents - as multiplication of stand volume with corresponding transition rate value (Table 2). The subsequent values were ascertained for spruce forests in Latvia: the total biomass comprised (01.01.2005) 117.1 million tons from which stem component included 60.2% and non-stem part - 39.8%; the branches contained 10.3%; needles - 10.6%; stumps - 5.3%; roots - 13.6% (Table 3). These data were suggested to be an additional reserve of forest resource utilization for energy purposes and reliable possibility to evaluate carbon accumulated in spruce forests.
