Sweet potato 'Bengueta' suitable for table and processing variety for the Philippine highlands

The Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center had been implementing a program that includes evaluating sweet potato germplasm collections sourced from the different breeding stations. This are embank in a germplasm block for the purpose of evaluation and conservation. In selecting a variety evaluation process involves several steps that includes preliminary, advanced, multi-locational yield trials until it will be recommended to the approving agency the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC). Tagalog, a highland cultivar was officially approved as a variety with recommended name 'Bengueta'. It has yellow flesh (carotene rich), light pink and elliptic to round-shaped roots. Mature leaves are colored green with purple immature leaves. This variety is moderately resistant to sweet potato foliage and stem scab (Sphacelloma batatas). Based from the experiments conducted across locations for two dry and wet season from 2001 to 2004, it outyielded the check variety PSBSp. Tagalog outyielded the check variety with 13.55t/ha and 8.89 t/ha. It had high yield, resistant to pest and diseases with high dry matter content, good eating quality, and possess good processing quality. This variety was evaluated to its suitability to various processed products such as cookies, buns, candies, puto, and was found to be highly acceptable. To disseminate this technology trainings, distribution of planting materials, publications and through radio programs; like BSU school on the air, are continuously being done. Participation during trade fairs is also a yearly traditional activity being done to exhibit sweet potato-based varieties and sweet potato-based food processed products. Likewise, the Center is semi-commercializing these processed products at the BSU Marketing Center as an income generating project.
