In vivo technique: the easier and cheaper way of producing lakatan and candaba planting materials.

The response of 'Lakatan' and 'Candaba' bananas to in vivo propagation technique was studied in the nursery using corms of different weights. The growth of resulting Lakatan planted fertilized with 46-0-0 and 14-14-14 was also evaluated. Corm weight of both Candaba and Lakatan did not significantly affect the number of days to emergence of first generation plantlets (GP, GA), the days from emergence to cutting of GP4, the days to emergence of second generation plantlets (GP2), and the days from emergence of GP2 to its cutting. The GP4 for Lakatan and Candaba emerged within 21-24 days and 53-57 days, respectively. These can be detached as plantlets from bagging within 43-50 days for Lakatan and 60-65 days for Candaba. The GP2 of Lakatan emerged with 8-9 days from cutting of GP1 and can be detached as plantlets 18 days from emergence. GP2 of Candaba emerged in 10-13 days from cutting of GP1. Lakatan corms weighing 1.1-3.0 kg produced 20-27 plantlets, which is 55-94 percent more than those produced from corms weighing 0.5-1.0 kg. Regardless of corm weight, candaba only produced 5-6 plantlets. The height and pseudostem diameter of detached plantlets were similar, indicating that they are of the same vigor and quality. A rate of 1.5g of either 46-0-0/plant or 14-14-14/plant enhanced the growth of plantlets, resulting to taller plants with bigger stem diameter and more leaves that are longer and wider. Fertilized plantlets were ready for field setting in 46-60 days from potting. Regardless of corm weight, the cost of production per plantlet only ranged from PhP1.73 to PhP2.51.
