Mineral nutrition on durian: nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium on pre-bearing trees

Pre-bearing durian trees, which received minimum amount of fertilizers and that were established at 8m x 8m, were used in the experiment. The durian trees were applied with varying levels of urea, ordinary super phosphate (OSP), and muriate of potash (KCl)to determine the influence of fertilizers on the different parameters of tree growth and reproductive development. Durian trees of pre-bearing age, which were fertilized with 400g urea, 445g OSP, and 135 KCl, responded vigorously in terms of tree height and stem circumference. The positive effect of fertilization on growth of trees could be attributed to the low level of nutrient elements in the soil. Accordingly, more flower-bearing branches and flower clusters developed on trees that received minimum levels of fertilizer materials. The low level of fertilizers applied had adequate nutrient elements, such as nitrogen(N), phosphorous(P), and potassium(K), for pre-bearing trees that hastened tree growth and promoted early onset of reproductive development or shortened the juvenility period on durian.
