Growth and yield of sunflower under influence of mungbean intercropping

A study on intercropping of sunflower and mung bean was carried out at Students Farm, Department of Agronomy, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam during spring, 1999. The treatments were sole and intercrop (1:1 Row Proportion) of both sunflower and mung bean. The growth and yield attributes of both crops such as seed germination per 1m row, plant height, branches plant-1, stem girth, pods plant-1, head diameter, seeds head-1/ pod-1, seed weight head-1/ plant-1 and seed index differed non-significantly between sole cropping and intercropping. Whereas, biomass yield plant-1 and seed yields kg ha-1 had non-significant effects for sunflower and highly significant differences for mung bean sole cropping and intercropping. The results revealed that seed yield of both crops was increased when grown alone and decreased when intercropped. However, it was clear from the data that intercropping recorded highest sunflower equivalent yield (3111 kg ha- 1), land equivalent ratio 1.49 and price equivalent ratio 1.65 compared with seed yield of 2369kg ha-1 LER 1.0 and PER 1.0 of sunflower in sole cropping system. It is admitted that intercropping is more beneficial than sole cropping in terms of additional harvest and monetary advantages. Therefore intercropping can be practiced to maximize the crop production from the unit area under prevailing conditions.
