Preliminary studies on plankton communities associated with the mangrove forest habitats at Halayib-Shalatin sector, Red Sea, Egypt

The subject is the ecologically important mangrove area of the Red Sea located at the borderline of Egypt and Sudan (Halayib-Shalatin Sector). During August 2001; three mangrove stands were studied and the results showed that Stand I was the most productive site for both phytoplankton and zooplankton, followed by the stands II and 111. Plankton samples at the three stands were characterized by low diversity of species and numerical density. 25 species of phytoplankton were identified among which 15 species of diatoms (68.0%), eight species of dinoflagellates (25.48%) and two species of cyanophytes (6.47%) with a maximum abundance at Stand I (1225 unit/L-1). On the other hand, zooplankton population comprised 26 species included in 23 genera within 6 taxa, namely, Tintinnida, Foraminifera, Ostracoda, Copepoda, Decapoda, Urochordata and Cephalochordata. The maximum occurrence for these species was also at Stand I (6214 organism.m3). Copepoda and Protozoa together comprised more than 94% of the total zooplankton. Some physicochemical parameters (temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen) were measured at the time of plankton collection at only two of the three Stands (I & III).
