The paper is devoted to the protection and use of water resources in small catchments dominated by agriculture. Presented problems pertain to a new policy of the European Union reflected in the Water Framework Directive. It was assumed here that appropriate water management is prerequisite for sustainable development of rural areas and that nature and agriculture are the equally important water consumers
