Effect of cultivation season and sorbent applied on the yield and content of some nutritional components in lettuce leaves

Charlene butterhead lettuce was cultivated in an unheated foil tunnel in 2000-2002. The experimental factors were two production seasons: spring and autumn sorbents: potassium Escorb, sodium Acrylgel, potassium Acrylgel, sodium-potassium Acrylgel. The cultivation season and the sorbents applied to the soil did not have a significant effect on the total yield of lettuce. However, the commercial yield was significantly determined by both the sorbent applied to the soil and its correlation with the cultivation season. Based on the results only the differences in the content of total sugars and beta-carotene determined by the experimental factors were statistically significant. The spring lettuce had a significantly higher content of total sugars when compared to that harvested in autumn. The highest content of sugars was accumulated by spring lettuce cultivated in the soil supplemented with potassium Escorb. The highest level of beta-carotene was found in autumn lettuce cultivated on the control soil
