The main objective of the workshop was to promote the development of the East African Network on Plant Genetic Resources (EAPGREN). The workshop aimed to contribute towards strengthening the national level political and institutional frameworks for the effective and sustainable use, exchange and conservation of plant genetic resources within the countries of East Africa. It provided an opportunity to use the experience of the European network, 22 years after its formal establishment, as a viable example for regional collaboration. At the workshop, a historical review of the European Cooperative Programme for Crop Genetic Resources Networks (ECP/GR), a description of its current organizational structure and a summary of the main outputs delivered by the programme were presented. An analysis of the programmes strengths, weaknesses and future perspectives was also made. Papers were presented on national institutional frameworks for conservation of plant genetic resources; national programme development activities in Germany; regional institutional frameworks; the importance of regional networks in the conservation and use of plant genetic resources; EAPGREN case study; SWOT as a method for systematic analysis and planning in national and regional PGR frameworks; and international frameworks for conservation of plant genetic resources. Country reports were presented on Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Participants suggested ways in which EAPGREN could contribute towards improved conservation and utilisation of plant genetic resources in Eastern Africa
