This study was initiated to assess the phenotypic variation of endemic black iris (Iris nigricans Dinsm.) in Jordan. Three locations (Jarash, As-Salt and Ma'daba) were selected and samples were taken from eight populations. Twelve characters related to stem, leaves, flower stalks and flowers were measured. Similarity matrices were calculated using Pearson's correlation. The results indicate that there is a decrease in vegetative growth from the north to the south following the aridity gradient. Leaf height was the most variable trait. The microclimate conditions were the determinant factors for variability among the populations. The results were of significance for future work on Black iris aiming at determining the best strategy for conservation. Until then, legal measures should be taken to protect the most disturbed populations (sites), located near urbanized areas.
