The major chromosome pairing locus (Ph1) in hexaploid wheat: a perspective
2007
Moore, G.
Western civilization owes much of its foundation to pasta and bread wheat. These species are polyploidy, possessing multiple diploid sets of chromosomes. Pasta and bread wheats exist only because the Ph1 locus stabilizes the pairing of these multiple related chromosome at meiosis. It provides a high level of fertility and seed set. This article reviews current knowledge of the biological effect of this important locus. It provides insights into how one might induce pairing between related chromosomes for breeding.
