Contribution of science on vegetable production

In Serbia today, there are 265 000 - 270 000 ha of land under vegetables. A part of this production is performed in greenhouses. Significant contribution to vegetable growing had been attained by establishing organized and planned selection of new varieties and hybrids. Planned assortment control and selection of vegetables in ex Yugoslavia started during middle 60s. Today, in Serbia selection of new varieties and hybrids is carried out in the Institute for Vegetable Crops in Smederevska Palanka, the Institute for Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad and private seed company Superior in Velika Plana. New selected varieties and hybrids, during 70s caused stronger bonding of science and vegetable production reflected in constant education of farmers. Bond of science and production is present today and their common contributions are concrete results. Numerous and quality scientific results have been acknowledged within country and outside it and all those results bear the mark of world science regardless to numerous, first of all financial problems.
