[Therapeutic efficacy of different treatment methods of calves with pasteurellosis]

The most common routes of treating pasteurellosis in calves based on using a hyperimmune anti-pasteurellosis serum in combination with antibiotics were analyzed and a new complex method was proposed – internal administration of refine turpentine (RT) on a 40% glucose solution. Under observation were 294 calves with acute and chronic pasteurellosis and different fatness. Of all the antibiotics (nitox-200, gentamicin, hydrochloride oxytetracycline), only the combination of anti-pasteurellosis serum at the dose of 60 ml and nitox-200 – 1 ml/kg once every 3 days at early stage of disease and good fatness promoted the recovery of 90-96% calves with treatment lasting 20 days. The treatment of debilitated calves gave a therapeutic effect ranging from 63 to 75%. Turpentine therapy for acute and chronic pasteurellosis by administering into the jugular vein 2.0 ml of refined turpentine followed by administering 100-150 ml of a 405 glucose solution (readministration after 3 days, if required) gave 1005 therapeutic effect with treating lasting within 10 days. Observed: body temperature by 1, 2 degrees C, acceleration of heart (up to 120 impulse/min), of respiratory movements (up to 51), defecation and urination reached maximum at the first 2 hours after the administration of turpentine and become normal for 4-5 hours. In calves with chronic disease form at day 1 after turpentine therapy enhanced purulent mucous effluxes from nasal passages; after 5-6 hours the systemic condition improved, after 8-12 hours appetite appeared, pulse and body temperature normalized. It is concluded that the method of intravenous administration of turpentine with glucose is low-cost, easy to use and gives 100% survivability.
