Effect of calcium carbonate on urea nitrogen transformation in soil columns

A laboratory soil column experiment was set up to investigate the effect of different levels of calcium carbonate (CaC03) on urea-N transformation with time. The soil samples were collected in 1998 from the field of Al-Marj Experimental Station, east of Tripoli city, Libya. The soil belongs to the order Mollisols, suborder Rendolls, Typic Rendolls, which is an association of red ferrisiallitic typical leached clay soil. A complete randomized design with three replicates was chosen for executing the experiment. The experiment consisted of three levels of urea fertilizer (0, 80 and 160 kgN/ha) and three levels of CaC03 (1 %, 12% and 24% on weight basis). The entire experiment was replicated five times to allow sampling every week for a period of five weeks in order to follow up the nitrogen changes with time. The results showed that increasing CaC03 level from 1% to 24% enhanced the rate of urea-N transformation per unit time but caused a significant reduction in both NH/-N and N03'N . The adverse effect of the added CaC03 increased with time and soil depth. However, increasing nitrogen fertilizer rate, at all levels of CaC03 addition, gave a significant rise in both NH/-N and N03-N content in the soil
