Growth performance and grain yield stability of some open pollinated varieties of Maize (Zea mays L.)

Maize genotype in their response to variable environmental conditions, change in relative ranking. This is an inevitable consequence of growing a sets of varieties at different environments, accordingly this study was concluded with the objectives to measure the extent of variability, performance, yield stability and magnitude of association among yield components of seven open pollinated maize varieties grown in Sudan. These maize varieties were evaluated at Gezira and Rahad Research - Randomized Complete Block Design with four replicates. The data were collected on 16 traits measured at vegetative, reproductive stages and some other evaluated after harvesting. Great variability was detected among the varieties for most of the traits over locations and seasons. Giza-2 was found to be the highest yielding (3.5 t/ha) variety followed by the open pollinated maize varieties introduced from CIMMYT (PR.89B-5655, PR.91 A-222F and PR.91 A-44 1) yielding between 3.3 and 3.4 t/ha, while Hudiba-l was found to be the lowest yielding (3.0 t/ha) variety in evaluation over all locations and seasons, but differences in grain yield between varieties were not significant. In this study, grain yield revealed a highly significant positive correlation with car dry vleight and number of kernels per row. Ear traits are positively correlnted to each other. Despite the higher grain yield revealed by Giza-2 throughout evaluation in this study it was found to be the least stable variety. Besides the lower yield potential exhibited by the variety Hudiba-l, it also revealed the lowest stability supported by the fact that it is only released for Northern Sudan. PR.89B-5655 and Var-l13 could be recommended as high yielding more stable varieties for cultivation at Gezira and Rahad areas
