The levels of heavy metals in some plants (chamomile, stinging-nettle, winter wheat, rape, clover-grass mixtures, and grasses) and soils near a chemical factory in the environmentally loaded central Zemplin region were monitored over 2003-2004. Nine localities were selected for the study. Heavy metal contents of the plants under observation were found not to exceed the allowable limits. The results from evaluating the levels of heavy metals in the soils showed their low variance. No extremely high or low concentrations were measured with the exception of the lead content in Petrovce n/Laborcom locality whose level was 142.8 mg per kg. The achieved statistical results indicate the possibilities of utilizing rape as a bioindicator in determining environmental loading, especially with cadmium.
