Patterns of communication between the auriculotemporal and facial nerves in dogs

Purpose of this study was to examine the patterns of communication between the auriculotemporal and facial nerves in the dogs. Dissection was carried out on 82 facial sides (50 male and 32 female sides). The nerve that communicated between the auriculotemporal and facial nerves is called the communicating auriculotemporal nerve (CATN) the number and position of CATN joining to the facial nerve were identified, recorded and classified, the results was as follow. (1) There were 1-3 branches of CATNs. (2) The CATNs patterns was classified into 3 types as the following : Type 1, there was 1 branch of CATN (2.44 percent), Type 2, there were 2 branches of CATN (89.02 percent) and Type 3, there were 3 branches of CATN (8.54 percent). (3) The result of this study is similar to the previous studies in Thais.
