Temperate fruits could be produced commercially in highlands of northern Thailand, but there were some limiting factors such as a short harvesting season, marginal fruit qualities and unsuitable for marketing demand. These problems could be alleviated by breeding methods because these characters were genetically controlled. Therefore, the temperate fruits breeding program was initiated with several objectives. These included development of new cultivars with better adaptation to highlands' climate, good fruit qualities, and prolong of harvesting season. Introduction of 87 newly bred cultivars of peaches, nectarines and plums from other countries for testing and evaluation at 2 sites (Angkhang and Khunwang) were carried out for selection of promising clones. Controlled crosses between imported pollens of good fruit qualities but not adapted cultivars as males with locally adapted cultivars as females were done to create new hybrids. At present, 8 promising clones were selected. These were peaches consisting of tropicBeauty, Desertred, Flordaglo, TXW1191-2, TXW1193-1, TXW1194-1 and nectarines consisting of Sunblaze and Sunraycer. Controlled crosses resulted in more than 6,800 seedlings being planted for future evaluation.
