The data for determining the humidity of sustainable wilting of grain crops of modern peat soils of Polesje region of the Republic of Belarus was presented. The dependences of the sustainable wilting humidity values on the organic substance content and bulk density of soils were ascertained. There were stated no considerable dependences of the sustainable wilting humidity on the terms of agricultural use (even after 30 years) and automorphy degree of soils. In order to obtain the comprehensive assessment it was necessary to evaluate the sustainable wilting humidity value in combination with the total water content capacity. To realize this it was necessary to determine the capillary water capacity of the root layer of all studied objects under conditions of the reduced groundwater levels (lower than 1,5 m) corresponding to the dry periods. The obtained dependence of sustainable wilting humidity on the content of organic matter in soils used for the agricultural production showed that components with the hydrophobic substances appeared in the process of organic matter transformation. It was stated that the analysed aspect of the pedogenic process can not be single-valued only from the viewpoint of water and physical properties. For the realization of its effective evaluation it was necessary to analyse the agricultural and biochemical indices. The dependence of the sustainable wilting humidity on the soil cover density in its natural condition was appropriate for the assessment of the productive water reserves of the root layer in the conditions of volume density value more than 0,5 g/cm3. In the conditions of volume density value more or equal to 0,5 g/cm3 it was proposed to use the dependence of sustainable wilting humidity on the organic matter content in soil layer
