Results of the comparative research of variety samples of reed canary grass (Digraphis arundinacea) according to the winter hardiness indices in the conditions of hay laying and for seed production in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus were presented. The best variety samples in each studied group were revealed and influence of winter conditions on variety agronomic character and peculiar features was analysed. Research results showed that reed canary grass had the genetically conditioned winter resistance, however, it depended on the weather conditions and the frequency of alienation of the top. It was stated that the studied plant groups with different maturity rate showed the different level of cold resistance: groups of early crops showed higher level of cold resistance in comparison with mid-ripening and late-ripening samples. The research has ascertained that the variety samples from Karelia, Sverdlovsk, Murmans and Vologda regions of Russian Federation showed the best resistance to cold. Research results proved that reed canary grass could be characterized as the cold resistant culture and could be recommended for cultivation in Belarus
