A follow-up of the vegetation was carried out within the framework of a comparison between rotational grazing (RG) and continuous grazing (CG) in Posieux. Before the trial, the old ley was mainly mown. The change of utilisation permitted to improve the botanical composition, whatever the grazing system. During five years, the share of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) increased of 23% with RG and 16% with CG. Common meadow grass (Poa trivialis) and other dicots plants regressed, in particular dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). Two years after the beginning of the trial, samples from both grazing systems were analysed in order to count the number of tillers and stems per unit of area. The tiller density was higher with CG (22 000 tillers/m2) than with RG (18 000 tiller/m2), mainly because the tillers of common meadow grass (covering nearly 70% of counted tillers) were definitely more numerous.
