Polygonum aviculare prefers heavier loamy and clay soils. It is not a noxious weed in sugar beet stands, except for heavily infested fields, open crop canopies, and on field margins. Pre-sowing application of metamitron can be used for its control (the herbicide has to be incorporated shallow in the soil). In the group of post-emergence herbicides, clopyralid and triflusulfuron show the highest efficacy. Contact herbicides (phenmedipham and desmedipham) are not efficient enough.
